Publishers that accept SFF manuscripts without an agent

Small presses/indie publishers can be a good option for authors without an agent who still want the support of traditional publishing.

Unlike vanity presses, traditional publishers will never ask you for money. While not all publishers are able to pay advances, they usually cover the editing and production costs and pay royalties.

I compiled a list of of 30+ of independent traditional publishers that accept un-agented novel manuscripts in the science fiction and fantasy genres, particularly in the adult category. Some of these only open for submissions during certain periods.

I’m not endorsing any of these publishers and they may not be a good fit for everyone. Remember to do your own research and read each publisher’s guidelines before deciding to submit to them. And ALWAYS get contracts checked out by a lawyer. If you’re a member of a writers association, they may provide this service for free or at a discounted rate. You can also ask your local citizen advice organisation for tips on finding affordable legal rep.
