Ozzy Osbourne Lyrics As Writing Advice

When I was a student, one of my best friends had a situation with her accommodation, so she moved in with me, into the shoebox apartment I was flatting in. We slept in my single bed for weeks.

Each morning, her alarm would play I Just Want You by Ozzy Osbourne, and every morning, she would snooze it at least ten times, at which point I was ready to murder her. But I was too polite. She was a guest, after all.

You’d think this would make me despise this song, right? Instead, it somehow morphed into a warm and fuzzy core memory. And yes, we’re still friends.

So, I thought this would be an appropriate way to commemorate a legend. RIP.

There are no unlockable doors

You’ll face many closed doors on this journey— creative blocks, industry gatekeeping—but with persistence and open-mindedness, there’s always a way in.

There are no unwinnable wars

Self doubt, imposter syndrome, fear of failure can be your biggest obstacles. But remember, your demons are never stronger than you.

There are no unrightable wrongs

You can revise anything. Write the messy first draft!

Or unsingable songs

If there’s a story burning inside you—no matter how “out there”—it needs to be told. And you’re the best person to tell it. Begin, and you will find your way and your voice.

There are no unbeatable odds

Ignore the evidence that insists the odds are stacked against you. Delusion is the key to success.

There are no believable gods

Take all writing advice with a grain of salt. Worship no idols. There’s no one right way.

There are no unnameable names

This one is for the Fantasy crowd—who cares if no one can pronounce your characters names? Go wild! Knock yourselves out!

Shall I say it again?
There are no impossible dreams

Self-explanatory. Aerosmith echo this when they tell you to “dream on until your dream comes true.”

There are no invisible seams

Don’t let perfectionism get in the way of finishing your story. All books are glued together from something. Don’t try to erase all traces of “the artist’s hand.” Sometimes that’s the charm.

Each night when the day is through, I don’t ask much, I just want you...

TO WRITE YOUR DAMN BOOK!!!

So that one day, someone can love it as much as Ozzy loved Sharon.
