K-Pop: Culture and Authenticity

I finally watched K-pop Demon Hunters (twice this week actually, with the little human singing along to every song). It’s a fun film with great bangers. Rumi’s story is relatable for someone forced to mask their neurodivergence for most their life (me). And it also reminded me of an essay I did at uni about K-Pop and the concept of authenticity within the music industry for a popular music studies paper (I think?? I’m old, it was a very long time ago).

I didn’t actually listen to K-Pop at the time, which is precisely why I chose it — I like to challenge myself. Let’s just say it’s a bit of a takedown of western ethno-centrism. See for yourselves:
